Parinda (Meaning – The Bird) is an award-winning 1989 Indian film directed and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Parinda is considered by many to be the turning point in reality in Hindi cinema, as the theme of the film discusses the real life of Indian underworld gangsters and the general life of residents in the city of Bombay (now Mumbai).

This song, a masterpiece of Pancham da (R D Burman) was one of the four songs in the movie. This was the most popular one too. An excellent composition by the legendary composer and beutifully rendered by Suresh Wadkar and Asha Ji.

Here I have attempted to sing this with Smitha Passanha. I am sure you all will listen to this and give your feedback..

A Malayalam song which really makes me VERY VERY nostalgic. It brings back the memories of my school days.. I had sung this song for a function to raise funds for the war fund. This was probably in 1965 or 1966.

Like "Kadalinakkare " this song again needs no intro for a Malayali. I did try to sing this almost a year ago…but did not come out as I wanted to be. I think I have rendered with better perfection now and thought I would share it with all of you …

This song is slightly a deviation from the songs I normally sing. But have tried to do my best ..

For the Malayalam film music, “Chemmeen”(1965) the movie which got the President’s Gold medal, was a major turning point. It was the first of many malayalam movies (around 25 in total) for which the veteran music director Salil Choudhury gave music.

The songs of this movie, needless to say, were super hits. It was my wish to render this song for long ..But it somehow was not coming to my priority list till a friend in Muziboo.com , Mr.Subramanian (SUBBU) who suggested to me to sing this in one of his comments to a song of mine.. Thanks Subbu for suggesting..

This is a very special song for me…for various reasons. First and foremost beause it is such a beautiful song with such lovely lyrics. Secondly lot of nostalgic memories come to my mind with this song. Both good and bad memories.. This song reminds me of a very successful stage show of mine done in 1983, in which I personally taught this song to a girl who sang it very extremely well in the show. That was the good part of the memory of the show..The sad part is that Arun Dalvi, a singer in the show, died on the same night in an accident..

I am attempting this wonderful composition of Ravi. This song from the movie ‘Nikaah’ was originally sung by Salma Agha. This is the first time I am singing a female original song. I have also made certain variations in the song. I have tried to sing with controlled emotions…..not the crying type…

Another duet with my daughter Priyanka.

One of the finest melodies composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy team for the film ‘Lakshya’. The song was originally sung by Hariharan and Sadhana Sargam..

The track which unfortunately was only there for one antara…I copied it again for the second antara. As a result the interlude music is same before both the antaras…

This song was proposed to be sung with another female singer.Due to her throat infection, we had to keep postponing this project. At last she told me to go ahead and sing with someone else as there were no signs of improvement in the condition of her throat ....I would have normally waited for her to get well and then record.. But here Priyanka was very keen on singing this , though did not tell me about that..I sensed it and let her sing this... I think she did a good job anyway..

One of the most popular songs of Hemant Kumar (1920-1989). From the movie “Kohra” , this song is composed and sung by Hemant da himself. This song was again sung by Lataji as a tribute to Hemant da in her Album “Shradhanjali” and also sung by Jagjit Singhji in his album ” Close to My Heart”.

My rendition here is a mixture of all the three versions of the song as mentioned above. However the Karaoke track is as per the original of Hemant da.

Tera Chehra Kitna Suhana Lagta Hai - Cover By N V Krishnan

Presenting a Ghazal after a long time…Again a Jagjit Singh ji’s number from his album “Unique”. It is a very melodious as well as meaningful romantic Ghazal.

A strange thing happened while recording this song. I had sung and recorded with lot more harkatein and improvisations than the current one. I was tooo happy with the outcome also, a very rare feeling for me about my own songs. But unfortunately when I saved it and played it back, the vocals were playing in a note lower than the track..!!!!!. There was no way I could do anything as it had already been mixed. The master file in the recording software was playing alright, though when mixed and saved again it was playing wrongly. At last I had to discard that recording and re-record the whole song again... I was sooo fed up of the whole thing and decided to sing very simply without much improvisations... :( I still have not figured out how this happened...!!!!

A Malayalam song from the movie “Perumazhakkalam” , originally sung by P.Jayachandran and Sujatha, composed by M.Jayachandran.

Singing a song with my daughter Priyanka after a long time. That too a Malayalam song..!!! I had a real tough time teaching her to pronounce the words. I think she managed them(diction) quite well. She had to take utmost care on singing part while concentrating on the diction too much.

"Kallai", a suburb of my home town Calicut, has a special connection with my life. That is my birthplace. Kallai is very famous for timber business. It was considered to be the biggest timber market in the world after Ottawa in Canada. I am not too sure if that is so even now. .

I am really glad that I am singing a song starting with the name of my birthplace....:)

Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye - Cover By N V Krishnan

Songs from the movie "Anand" are very special to me. First and foremost due to the melody in them and secondly as I used to sing them quite often. These were the first songs which I had recorded in a tape-recorder for the first time and heard them myself. I am talking about the early seventies...1971 , to be more specific. Prior to this though I had sung on stage, but I could not hear what I sang, which all wish to. Our neighbor had bought a spool type tape recorder - GRUNDIG make. Knowing that I do sing, they invited me to their house and asked me to sing in to the tape recorder.

Wow...I still remember how it felt to hear my own voice when the recorded voice was played back. In fact the very first song I recorded was another song, "main ne tere liye hi.." from the same film (Anand).

I have tried to sing the song "Kahin Door.." to the best of my abilty and to some extent in my own style. Do give your feedback. It means a lot to me..

I have sung this with my good friend and an excellent singer Rashmi Nair. I personally felt that Rashmi was at her best in this.

I remember my days in Bhandup, Mumbai, where I was living as a paying guest during my bachelor days. I had a small tape recorder which used to play non stop Jagjit Singh ji's Ghazals....so much that once my house-owner, in whose flat I was staying came and asked me..

"If at all you want to play music so loudly why cant you play some good filmi songs? Why these ghazals which none of us enjoy?"

One of the ghazals I used to play then was "Kal chaudwin Ki raat thi" . Here I have tried to sing it in my own style - means I have made some improvisations in certain harkatein.

In addition to the version of Jagjit ji, there is another version sung by Ghulam Ai Saheb also of this great ghazal written by Ibne-e-Insha.
